『𝔐𝔬𝔯𝔦𝔯 𝔢𝔰 𝔳𝔦𝔳𝔦𝔯』

She is very tired.
The moon rises, blesses wretched corners of the cemetery, casts light on cold stone and gnarled vines. This land is old– names are faded, dates long forgotten.
And she knows not her own name,
nor how long she has been here.
She only knows that she is very tired.
Up, she looks, up seems so high now where she was once nimble, agile. Heights not feared, but revered in the challenge. But her tiny paws are dirty, weathered from a life beyond a home.
Regardless, she makes it to the top of the sarcophagus, but quickly finds herself on her back, exhausted beneath the stars. Her golden eyes close, body held in what feels like sleep.
A dream she has had before.
Where it all changes again.
Somewhere else, somewhere new.
To live with vitality…
but it is
slowly, slowly
fading.
“Oh, what do we have here?”
Clear, yet so distant. A chuckle resounds, but the little one cannot move.
“It’s not time for you to go just yet.”

The voice fades into oblivion, that beautiful space the little one knows just before she tumbles into form. But this time,
this time,
she remains; remains [contained]
coffinless
a cemetery cat
morningless in her body anew.
She breathes a lungful of morning, the sun breaking the horizon line in viscous pastel, and those golden eyes open to see. A garden abandoned, but loved by the sky, the rain, nothing in vain in this silent corner of modernity.
Strawberries.
“Dying.”
Somehow, she understands.
The finality of the word, sanctioned for losing, loss, going beyond.
The end.
“Your name is Dying.”
Yes, it is. To be. To live is to do the same.
She turns towards the voice, suddenly looking at a ghost, familiar in feline, with skulls in their phantom irises.
“What will you do now?”
She looks over at the fields, grass green over the dead, filled with silence. What may have been, what could have been. The spectral cat waits patiently for a response. Dying turns her head, confident in existence, exigence in words escaping:
“I vow to bring them happiness.
Even now.
I will try to make them proud.”
